I’m sure some of you know what I’m talking about, in the days before the kinja we had a tiered commenting system. People with these stars were the ones featured on the FP. So people that were around then, do you remember how you got yours? Or have you forgotten you had a star or are some of you like what the hell is a star?

I had a star on both Jalopnik and Gawker. For the Jalopnik star I photoshopped used paint to install the then-pope in the then-current Tesla Roadster. I don’t remember the context. I found the picture on my hard drive. Last edited December first, 2010.

no idea. but I do recall my first comment on oppo. I had been a FP commentor for an eon, stirring the pot, you know, how front pagers be. So someone makes a post in oppo about “should I respond to this troll (speaking of me) or what?” so I replied to their oppo post that they shouldn’t feed the trolls.

Although I had a tag on my username that was a little pointed at the whole star system, so I’m sure I didn’t help my case.

PotbellyJoe - Second Class Commenter wasn’t super popular with Roy Wort, and I was quick to call them out for crap at the time, notably the Comments-as-content that was happening way too much.

I started out in the Gawker universe by reading io9. It was probably right before Denton introduced kinja, so sometime at the tail end of the star era. But it was ages before I ever read a single comment because I knew and abided by one of two cardinal rules of the Internet*: Never read the comments.

Comment sections were supposed to be filled with crazy people spouting racism and misogyny so horrible that they made that one racist uncle at Thanksgiving you always hated look like Christ descending from the heavens surrounded by golden rays of light and angel song.

And for MOST internet comment sections, that’s absolutely true.

Eventually, I found the Gawker comment section and became approved there, with Jez and Jalopnik following.

*The second cardinal rule of the Internet, as we all know, is Rule 34.

Most internet comment sections are exactly as you described, it’s kinda refreshing when the comment section isn’t like that. That is one good thing about having the be approved; however, some of the writers on other gawker sites would ban you for disagreeing with them. That was why I stuck to Jalopnik only.

I got mine on the very last day before kinja. It was kind of honorary I guess. The whole thing came about because there was this discussion about who among the unstarred had the most “friends” or “followers” or whatever. I had something like 1200 but my commenting scope was so narrow (american muscle) that I never got one. I don’t know if I’ll ever forget that day, I spent years and countless hours just hanging out on jalopnik. It really meant something, as odd as that might sound. You young fellas probably don’t care a lick about stuff like that.

I think it’s better without stars, don’t feel like second class citizens anymore. I know I had one, but for awhile I didn’t.
